Sally’s History of Hair
1955
1955 Humble Hair beginnings. Short and manageable. As a baby, however, I was little and unmanageable and remained so until my 43rd birthday. Dig that T shirt action will ya?
1959
1959 Who are the people in your neighborhood? In your neighborhood, in your neighborhoooooood? Here I am in pigtails standing in front of some reasonably inexpensive real estate at the putt putt near my South Side Chicago home. As for hair, you can't go wrong with pigtails.Boy's just love 'em. Easy to grab, pull, and yank.
1973
Sitting on my dad's car with my guitar case, back when my hair had little to do with me, as I had little to do with it.
Mid 1970's
Mid 1970's On stage at a wonderful place in Chicago "Troubles" a Lincoln Avenue Club owned by Steve Goodman, named after his song, "Somebody Else's Troubles." I was doing folky gigs back then in the mid '70s. I'm not sure of my musical abilities, but I sure had great Folk Hair.
1970's professional photo shoot
Mid 1970's A professional photo shoot and forgive me, but I don't have a clue who took it. This was during my pouty Veronica Lake period. I had just broken my nose two weeks before this shoot. I had been opening up a huge Venetian blind that came off its brackets and cracked me across the face. So here's my fabulous new nose, that hadn't been paid for by the time this photo was taken.
Sally at 24 years old.
So young, natural color, no highlights, no perm, no blow dryer, no hair spray. Nothing to spend money on, but shampoo. Those were the days. Also, I made that skirt!
On top of the World 1978
Touring with the all-female bluegrass band, The Buffalo Gals, I still sported groovy folk hair with its’ minimal needs. However, my hair was accessorized by the over-sized shades and really cool clogs that I wish I still had. Waaaaa.
Arrested Development- Pig Tails 1979?
I had just purchased my very first "off the lot new car" a Yellow Honda Civic. Ooops, it's a stick shift, oh oh! I learned to drive stick right there at the dealership. I think this photo was taken by my passenger who needed to get out of the car to hurl - but first snapped my sheepishness.
It's a Gift 1981
Yep, I still skate. I also have returned to layers and wispy hair. However, I'm no longer able to get my leg in the air like that.
1982 LP "Enclosed" photo shoot
This was from my 1982 LP "Enclosed" photo shoot and subsequent photo for my press kit. I loved this spandex top and wore it all the time. It was so very "Gidget goes to prison!" Photo by D.R. Goff.
Rock Chick 1983
Down in Florida gigging solo, my pal Larry Diner hosted my Christmas Birthday dinner and took this photo. His girlfriend did my makeup. What fun!!
Folk Chick(s) 1983
Well, that would be me permed up, sitting on the lap of my all-time best babe buddy Debi Smith (her sister Megan is on the left) We were at a booking conference in Nashville. I'm sitting on Deb's lap, and she's sitting on her hair. Seriously.
Unraveled and Untangled 1990
Photo by the brilliant late D.R. Goff. This was from my Unraveled CD shoot. A makeup artist did this Euro thing to my hair where she pulled it back with strands all about. I wish I'd been able to replicate this. One of those D.R. Goff moments. My mother loved this photo.
Bun Head 1990
Oh for Pete's sake, I think I did this one at a Sears or JC Penny photo studio. I can't remember. My father loved this photo, and it became mine after he passed away.
1991 Big Big Big Hair
1991 Big Big Big Hair. Big Big Big earrings. Big Big Big hairdresser bills.Photo by Ken Van Dyne
1991 Same shoot
1991 Same shoot, different pose. Still more hairspray, I vaguely remember strangers standing around with cans of Hair Net. I guess it's true what they say, "It takes a village to raise...HAIR!" Photo by Ken Van Dyne.
1991? 1992?
I believe it was this photo by Ken Van Dyne, where I coined the phrase, "Raving lunatic bitch of death," I looked like a grown up cranky girl in desperate need of a time out, or maybe a nap. Maybe it was PMS? Photo Mania Syndrome. I just wanted to play guitar, that's all.
Best Hair day of 1993
Photo by Ken Van Dyne, this one shot validated all the dough I spent on perms throughout the entire 80's and 90's with the perfection of this hair day. This was a once in a lifetime moment.
1996 Ken Van Dyne
1996, Ken Van Dyne. I loved this one. We decided to re-release "Enclosed" on CD from vinyl. Also, I had learned to give into the whole photo shoot thing. I just ran in, grabbed my hair, tilted my head and said "Okay...now."
1997 Photo by Ken Van Dyne
1997 Photo by Ken Van Dyne, for general press file photo. I look like the president of the PTA. I mean that in a good way. I think. Notice the straighter hair. In later photos you'll see I got better at the blow dryer/roundstyling brush affair. But not until 2001.
circa 2005
Photo by Terry Jordan for the 4BBabes Hormonal Imbalance CD. I went deep on the v-neck to show off a little girly goo. I must say, I hit my stride with this hair-cut, quick and easy!
Diva Nation
Photo by Terry Jordan, for our 2009 Diva Nation CD. More makeup, more hair spray, more lines on the Babe. You know what they say, "the older the violin, the sweeter the music!"
Mid Life Vices
Photo by Kendra Chilton in DC. I'm not sure I've changed all that much, as I spent a gazillion bucks on skin care, to hold back the clock. It's 2013!!! STOP!

My hair cutter Angie, nailed it. I get to be funky, or classy, and if my mother were alive, she'd be plotzing that FINALLY, I got my bangs out of my eyes. (But only in 1 photo, can't give it up completely!!!) Life is good, but this cut is expensive to maintain.
Don't even ask about the highlights and color!!
