ONCE YOU’VE READ THE STORIES, YOU’LL WANT TO HEAR THE SONGS.
ONCE YOU’VE HEARD THE SONGS, YOU’LL WANT TO READ THE STORIES!
In these forty-four hilarious and heartwarming tales, Sally documents the stories behind her best loved songs. Viewing the world through her own whack-a-doodle viewfinder, Sally celebrates her personal goofs and flaws, holding her domestic, artistic, and professional life, up to the light, with love, humor and heart. As a working mother, step-mother, wife, sister, friend, dutiful daughter, and free spirited touring musician, Sally loves to “study the nutty” and “figure-out outrageousness.”
Inside these 380 pages, Sally celebrates the insanity of the ordinary…the angst of the extraordinary…and, in short, honors the medicated Matriarchs, who handed down to her their love of family, big thighs, and wack-a-doodle DNA. You’ll find forty essays, stories, family (secret!) recipes, and thirty-three song lyrics. Each song lyric follows the story that motivated Sally’s songwriting. Stories such as “Greetings From the Land of Lime Jello and Really Bad Sanka” “What Married Women Want To Hear” “My Medicated Women” “J-Date and the Internet Dating Pool” “Bones as a Currency of Love” “What’s Up With Jewish Composers and Christmas Hits?” and many more.
Of course, Sally includes a few twisted family recipes like:
“Bubbe Chicken your Grandmother Wishes She Could Make”
“Naomi Garfinkel’s Mandel Bread, So Good You’ll Get Invited to Every Party, They’ll Want You Should Bring It.”
“Naomi Garfinkel’s Sweet Dairy Kugle, So Good You’ll Get Invited to Every Party, They’ll Want You Should Bring It.”
You can think of Sally’s DOUBLE-DISC CD as the glorious sound track to her new book—or, on its own, as a gorgeously inspirational and melodically epic tour de force. Either way, the 34-song anthology is an invitation to binge (listen with or without chocolate). Fans will recognize several newly-recorded versions of all-time favorites and will treasure the lilting and uplifting beauty of her new songs. A maverick pianist and guitar player and a powerhouse of a vocalist, Sally invites us, with her combination of tender ballads, soaring anthems, and kick-in-your seat musical punchlines, to sit up and listen, take stock in our lives and with bravado, applaud the crazy in our worlds
This CD set showcases the musical career highlights spanning Sally’s five solo CDs, and nine Four Bitchin’ Babes CDs. Sally went into the studio to throw down a do-over on songs like Boy on Wheels, One Easy Day, and Take Me Out To Eat, Home Is Where The Heart Is, Jewish Kid Born On Christmas Day, and Breakfast Dishes. Also included are new recordings of never released songs, dating back to her early Chicago Folk (Do Me-Show Me-Buy Me-Love Me-Give Me, The Dreidel Do-over, and Yiddishe Mama/Hatikvah Piano instrumental), not to mention the beautiful duet Sally performs with Janis Ian, (Little Girl Please Wait). Released all together as one bucket-list project!
